Additional Information/Consideration

Purchasing Cross Bow Equipment:

Every year more and more people decide to purchase Crossbows and Crossbow accessories (arrows, Broadheads, etc.). Because of this popularity, new companies are entering the Crossbow market and establishing companies such as Horton, Barnett, Excalibur Crossbows, and TenPoint Crossbows. The technological advancements are vast and include new /improved optics, bolts, Broadheads, and arrows.

All of these developments are good for hunters, But, if you're purchasing your first Crossbow package, you might be overwhelmed with the terminology (bolts, arrows, Broadheads, etc.) or the new choices in Crossbows or equipment. Here are a few things to think about  before and when venturing into the area of Crossbows and Crossbow equipment/accessories.

If you have friends who have Crossbows, ask if you might be able to try it out. This will give you an idea of what is involved and general exposure to Crossbows and Crossbow equipment/accessories (bolts, arrows, Broadheads, etc.). Further, it will give you some insight/training on cocking, loading, and discharging the Crossbow. They would also be able to explain accessories and terminology (bolts, arrows,Broadheads, etc.).

The Hunting Crossbow's weight and pounds of draw are both things to consider when when purchasing a Crossbow package. The lightest Crossbow might not be the best thing for a beginner, as, a little more weight will make the Crossbow steadier when discharging. Generally, heavier Crossbows provide  more consistency and accuracy when shooting. Another thing to determine is what kind of hunting you'll be doing. This will not only impact on the total weight you'll carry but also equipment/accessories needed.(bolts, arrows, Broadheads, etc.). Heavy Crossbows are like heavy rifles and must be considered if the hunt includes extensive hiking. However, if you have a stationary spot, the heaviness of the Crossbow won't matter as much.

A lot of older Archery hunters  now use Crossbows because hunting with a normal bow becomes more difficult with age. Some states, where Crossbows are illegal allow hunters in their 70s and 80s to use a Crossbow,  and most states allow it if the hunter is too handicapped to hunt otherwise. If you are among these groups, probably, the lighter the Crossbow equipment/accessories (arrows, bolts, Broadheads, etc.) the better.

Pounds of draw for all Crossbows is a critical factor. But, bigger is not necessarily better. The more pounds of draw, the harder it will be to cock the Crossbow. Crossbows with a 150 lb. draw are considered standard and ones that hunters use for deer. Many hunters use150 lb. Crossbows for small animals such as rabbits and squirrels; although, a 120lb. Crossbow is normally recommended. Crossbows with a 175 lb. draw should be used for caribou or similar size animals. A 200 lb. Crossbow draw must be used for the largest animals such as bear (don't be cheap with equipment/accessories.  What you don't want is a bear rushing you at 40 feet!

Today you can get recurve or compound Crossbow equipment. Many people choose a compound Crossbow for speed but that's a personal decision and should be based on what you're hunting. Don't skimp on Crossbow equipment/accessories. Purchase quality products (arrows, bolt, Broadheads, etc.). A good scope is critical. Most new hunters prefer their Crossbow scope to have a cross-hair pattern because that's what they are used to, but, a red-dot scope for Crossbows is highly reliable, accurate, and recommended.

The last thing to consider when purchasing Crossbows is whether to get the Crossbow and needed  accessories (arrows, bolts, Broadheads, scope, etc.) separately or buy as a package. The Crossbow package is a good choice, there could be a substantial savings, but, the accessories must be quality products as well
