It Can Be Confusing

Purchasing Consideration:

If you have ever stared at the rows and rows of ammo for sale in gun shops, you understand how buying ammo can be confusing and even harder than buying the weapon itself.. Whether it be for Handguns or Hunting Rifles, there are at least a dozen different choices as to the kind of bullet you should use.

Buying ammo is more complicated than just matching Handguns or Hunting Rifles with the proper caliber of ammunition. For instance - Take rimfire cartridges for a 22 Rifle. This is the most popular 22 Rifle ammo in the world; so you would think, having just bought a 22 Rifle, it should be a cinch to get the ammo needed and be out plinking in no-time - not true. What if  you wanted to use that 22 Rifle for both plinking and small game hunting. You've already got a choice that is going to involve two use-able types of  22 Rifle ammunition.

The most immediate choice in 22 Rifle ammo is 22S or 22LR. The S is for short barrel and the 22LR is for long rifle. The 22S is usually used in Handguns and 22LR in 22 Rifles. So you think that's easy enough, I'll take the 22LR for my 22 Rifle and be done with it. But, not so fast, there are more choices to make.

Both Winchester and Federal are at the top of the list in manufacturing quality ammunition for Handguns and Hunting Rifles. But, take a look at what just Winchester offers in 22LR ammo: DynaPoint, Supreme JHP or Supreme V-Max. Super - X comes in Full Metal Jacket, JHP, Power - Point, Lead Round Nose, #12 Shot, Blank, Lead Hollow Point, Lead Round Nose - Standard Velocity, and Power Point - Lead Hollow Point. Next they have Xpert Lead Hollow Point or Wildcat Lead Round Nose, DynaPoint-Plated, and Lead Flat Nose. Whew ! - that's just for your "22 Rifle", doesn't include your other Handguns or Hunting Rifle.

Simply-put, the ammo to buy should only depend on its intended use. For a 22 Rifle, hollow point is good for hunting, plinking, or even self-defense. It expands in the target causing more damage. A solid point is better in a semi-automatic, as to the hollow point 22 ammo tends to jam-up

Whether it be for your 22 Rifle, other Handguns, or Hunting Rifles, match grade Winchester ammunition is used  for target shooting. High velocity has more energy than standard velocity. That is important depending on target distance. Hyper-Velocity and other similar names mean it travels fast for high velocity penetration.

Again, your ammunition choices for your 22 Rifle, other Hunting Rifles, Handguns, or even Shotguns will be numerous. So before purchasing the ammo, give some thought  as-to its intended use. This should keep your choices down to a minimum.
